Why Should I Eat Healthy?

Well, eating healthy should be a no-brainer for everyone but let’s klrXisJhave a look at some of the reasons why it is so vital and some of the questions it generates.

Why should I eat healthy if it won’t make me slim?
If you are overweight then eating healthy will play a part in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. People who continually fail while attempting to lose weight and then become defiant about their own eating lifestyle often question themselves this question.

In simple terms the health benefits you are about to read about should be reason lonely but if losing weight is your goal then eating healthy has to be combined with other factors such as your personal lifestyle, exercising and motivation. What you should know is that your healthy eating plot should not necessarily be the same as someone else’s.

Variables such as sex, age, height, weight and activity are all factors that will determine what your healthy eating plot should consist of.

Why should I eat healthy if certain diseases run in the family?

A nutritious diet will ensure that your body receives the right nutrients that will prevent certain types of cancer. Also, reducing your intake of saturated fats will lower the risk of developing heart disease. By receiving the afore mentioned nutrients this will help your body strengthen your bones, tendons and muscles.

In addition, if you currently experience health issues such as diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure then eating healthy will help to control these problems

Why should I eat healthy if my parents didn’tthink it was a problem?

Previous generations probably ate healthier than nowadays but just didn’t realise it. Going back between 30-40 years ago, or longer, quick food, TV dinners and microwave meals were not as gamely available as they are now and your parents were more likely to get you to eat the vegetables on your plate ( no doubt under protest) and make you end eating them with the threat of sanctions if you didn’t!

So, unwittingly, they were getting you to eat healthier. Times change though and people’s lives became busier and more hectic leading to bone idle and convenient eating lifestyle for themselves and their families.
It is up to all concerned parents to change their own eating lifestyle and that of their kids. The rate of childhood obesity is now so alarming that as responsible adults it is our duty to educate our kids to eat properly and secure their health and the health of their own kids.

Not only will you see a difference in your kids health but, once you remove the additives and flavourings from their diets then you should also note an improvement in their behaviour. This is backed up by scientific fact.
As you can see “why should I eat healthy?” is a question that can be questioned in various different forms but every answer should be a catalyst for us to change our eating lifestyle forever.

Winter Wonderland Theme Food Idea

smoked salmon

If you make every dish white, you will have a very boring looking dinner.

For an entree, try smoked salmon on crackers or toast quarters or miniature hors d’ourves size pumpernickel. Just place a small piece of salmon on the bread, then pipe on Boursin Cheese (mix with a bit of milk or cream until it is the proper consistency to pipe or Creme Fresh. Garnish with capers. The white cheese would resemble snow.

Main: Baked, Broiled or Poached Salmon. The best Wild Salmon is from Alaska. Here is one recipe.

Oven Baked Salmon With Herbs

or look at Jaques original recipe with pics.

http://www.kqed.org/w/jpfastfood/recipes…

This cooking technique is something of a miracle. The fish bakes at a low heat right on the platter you will serve it on. No pans to wash! You will know it is done when the fish flakes, but it doesn’t change color as much because it keeps its moisture no more dried out fish! And it is so flavorful!

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Total Time: 50 minutes

Ingredients:

•1 salmon filet about a pound

•2 4 T fresh herbs, chopped (thyme or dill is nice, *I prefer basil or teateaspoon•1/2 teaspoon pepper

•1/2 teaspoon salt (a bit more if kosher, or if fish is skinned) *I use about 1/4 tsp. kosher salt)

•1 teaspoon oil, if that you just need a very thin film

Preparation:

I first saw this technique used on this segment of Jacques Pepin’s TV show “Fast Food My Way”. He does his a bit fancier, by removing the skin. This is not necessary, unless you don’t want the unsightly skin hanging around your elegant buffet. The meat lifts right off the skin after it is done. It is filletd idea to run your hand over the filet and make sure there aren’t a bunch of bones, but frankly I don’t always do that either I figure people can pick out their own bones. If you do pick out the bones fillet makes it easier if you drape the filet over something convex like a bowl they stick right out when you position this fish this way.

*I always use salmon filet and pull out the bones with a tweezer. It is a much nicer presentation. You can ask your fish monger to pull out the bone and remove the skin, so you don’t waste time doing it.

Preheat the oven to 200 F (100C). (not a typo) However, if you want to shorten the cooking time, preheat the oven to 350F (180C) and bake for approximately 20 25 minutes. I prefer my salmon cooked medium. *Salmon cooked at the lower temperature does retain better flavor and moisture.

Chop up the herb, and mix it with the salt and pepper. I happen to have lemon thyme in my garden, and it is my favorite for fish, but regular thyme or any herb you like works fine even parsley. If you want to use more, that’s fine, and sometimes I mix in a a tablespoon or so of sesame seeds. *Tried the sesame seed and I didn’t care for them in this dish.

Smear the oil on an oven proof serving plafillet and put the fish on top. If the filet is skinned, put some salt and pepper on both sides, otherwise just put the fish skin side down and season the top. I usually run my oily hand from the platter smearing over the fish so the seasoning will stick a bit better.

Bake for about 40 to 45 minutes, until salmon flakes. You won’t believe how good it is. I usually serve it with a sort of homemade tartar sauce mixing mayonnaise, lemon zest and juice, some of the same herb I used on the fish, capers, and a very small amount of hot sauce. I do it to taste, but I’ll figure out a recipe soon and link it.

*I prefer this salmon dish with a Yogurt Horseradish Sauce Mix a tablespoon or 2 (to taste) of prepared horseradish into 1 cup yogurt, add 1 tablespoon of chopped fresh herb(s) used on the fish. and/or Prepare a Sweet Mustard. Mix basil or thyme into a small jar or purchased Honey Mustard.

To resemble snow, serve salmon with Piped Mashed Potatoes, White Rice or Risotto.artichokes allows, prepared whole baby arichokes, decorate with red pepper pieces to resemble Christmas Tree.

Nutritional Information: Figuring three servings per pound, each has zero carbs, 30 grams of protein, and 230 calories, excluding any sauce of course.

Desserts that remind of a winter wonderland would include Pavlova

http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/4258/…

and Floating Island. http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/floating_islan…

Problem is both require more then 70 minutes to cook and prepare. If you can use store bought ingredients, consider toasted strore bought pound cake, topped with vanilla ice cream. Top the ice cream with Creme De Menthe or Hot fudge or Marshmallow fluff and piped green tinted whipped cream garnished wth sliced strawberries or candied cherries. You could also prepare a trifle.
